Mthonjaneni Local Municipality Commemorates Human Rights Month
South Africa commemorates Human Rights Month annually during the month of March. Human Rights Month reminds us of the unwavering commitment to justice, equality and a non-racial South Africa that was displayed by the men and women that protested against the restrictive pass laws implemented by the apartheid government.
26 years after the dawn of the democratic Republic of South Africa, I urge all resident of Mthonjaneni and beyond to use this period to reflect on the dreams and aspirations we have for an inclusive society that respects basic human rights and commitment to the rule of law for all South Africans.
There is a saying by George Santayana that says “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” All of us have a responsibility to promote and defend our hard earned democracy in honour of the 69 men and women who lost their lives on 21 March 1960.
I thank you.
