Mthonjaneni Municipality Commemorates Youth Month

Mthonjaneni Municipality Commemorates Youth Month

The celebration of Youth Day to commemorate the tragic events of 16 June 1976, gives us the opportunity to reflect on the progress made towards youth advancement since 1994. It also allows us to move towards finding solutions to ensure that our youth never experience the same challenges again.

We must continually strive to be a society that supports and develops its youth so the future of our country is one filled with promise and possibilities. Former United Nations Secretary-General Mr Kofi Annan once said “Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society’s margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies.”

Mthonjaneni Municipality recognises the critical role of our youth and have committed ourselves to ensuring that we provide as much support as possible towards youth development. Our leadership has also recognised the fact that education is the tool of empowerment and this year alone we awarded 78 learners from 13 wards within the Municipality with bursaries to cover their registration fees. We also uplifted more than 90 young people with Drivers licences from all 13 wards of Mthonjaneni Municipality.

We will continue to implement programmes that help upskill our youth and to help develop a better Mthonjaneni for all youth that reside in our municipality.
